English language class in Beijing:
Since 1999, KAP has provided support for an English Language Program for Tibetans at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing. Over 60 students have received training at this program, several of who have passed language tests and joined PhD. Programs. Since Tibetan students in China and Tibet are required to study exclusively in Chinese, they regularly choose to study Tibetan as their second language and therefore rarely have the chance to study English, a requirement for entrance into institutions of higher learning. The English Language Program provides Tibetan students sufficient training in English to pass the entrance examinations to the Colleges and Universities. This program is critical to the creation of an educated group of Tibetan individuals, dedicated to serving their local communities. In 2001, a group of 19 students completed their intensive English language training in July, and another group of 24 students began their classes in September. Governance and staff: The Tibet Fund board of directors meets a minimum of two times per year. The role of the Tibet Fund board is to set policy and administer funds. In addition, the board is responsible for raising funds for Tibet Fund projects. The board is divided into an Executive Board, made up of 5 Directors, which meets regularly throughout the year, and the full board, which meets less frequently. The role of the Executive Board is to set the agenda for the full board, as well as to make preliminary decisions regarding the allocation of funding, which are then taken to the full board for final approval.
