Khamsang father passed away when he was eight years old. His mother despite many difficulties took the responsibility bringing up her ten children. Soepa was born to a nomad family in Amdo region of Tibet. He looked after their yaks and sheep with his brother. Ven. Lobsang Thupten was born in the year 1932 in Central Tibet. At the age of ten, he joined Tashi Lhunpo Monastery at Shigatse, where he studied basic Buddhist philosophy and received Pharchin Degree. He escaped to India in 1959 after the Chinese invasion. He cared for his old blind mother and spent his life as a road laborer in and around Simla Hill Station, Northern India, like most of the Tibetan refugees. He rejoined Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in South India in 1972 and continued his studies. He served as the main prayer leader for five years and also served as the administrator of the monastery for two terms. Thupten Tendak

Tashi Lhunpo

Ven. Thupten Nyendak was born in 1937 at Shigatse, Central Tibet. At the age of twelve, he joined Tashi Lhunpo Monastery and became a novice monk. In 1959, he escaped to India after failed Cultural Revolution by Chinese in Tibet and became a refugee like thousands of other Tibetan brothers and sisters. In 1972, he rejoined Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in South India and got opportunity to practice his Buddhist studies. He served as administrator of the Tantric College for two years and disciplinarian in charge of the monastery for two years. Over all, he served in various departments until 1995. Now he is retired from his service, but continues to guide the office of the monastery in day-to-day activities.

Kachen Lobsang Tsultrim

Tashi Lhunpo

Ven. Kachen Lobsang Tsultrim was born in 1939 in Phari, Tibet and became a novice monk at the age of twelve at Tholing  Dratsang of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery. He fled to India in 1959 and continued his Buddhist philosophy study at the monastic refugee camp at Buxar, India. Besides his monastic schooling, he had the opportunity to study Astrology at Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute at Dharamsala, India. In 1972, he rejoined Tashi Lhunpo in exile and served as disciplinarian for 10 years. In 1999, he was appointed the Abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery and served for seven years. He is presently teaching and looking out for the monastery in many fields.

Tashi Sonam

Tashi Lhunpo

Ven Tashi Sonam was born in 1931 in Kumbum in Amdo province of Tibet. He spent his childhood with his family and worked as a farmer. At the age of 20, he joined Tashi Lhunpo and became a novice monk. He studied basic Buddhist philosophy and received Pharchin degree. In 1959, he fled to India and joined re-established Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in South India. He served the monastery in various departments during the most difficult time of it’s history. He is presently retired and spends his time teaching small monks.

Ngawang Dhondup

Tashi Lhunpo

Ven. Ngawang Khondup was born in 1934 at Shadok, Tibet. At the age of eight, he joined Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in Shigatse and studied Buddhist philosophy. In 1959, he fled to India after the Chinese invaded Tibet and spent many years at a refugee camp. In 1975, he was able to rejoin the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery and continue his practices. He served as main priest and disciplinarian in charge of the monastery in 1983, 1984, and 1995. He presently looks after our small monks.

Kachen Lhakdor

Tashi Lhunpo

Ven. Kachen Lhakdor was born in 1910 at Shigatse, Tibet. At the age of seven, he joined the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery and studied basic Buddhis philosophy. He gained the title of Kachen at the age of seventeen and joined the Higher Tantric College. When he was 24, he was appointed the leader of special lama mask dance and served for six years. He is a master in making sand Mandela, performing hand gestures, Buddhist rites and rituals and especially Cham dance (mask dance). In 1940, he came to India and stayed in Darjeeling for a few years. In 1973, he re-joined Tashi Lhunpo on special instructions from HHXIV Dalai Lama and Kyabe Trijang Rinpoche (former tutor to His Holiness). He served as the main teacher for many years. He is presently retired and a highly respected master of our time.

Phara Kalsang Chophel

Derpung Loseling

Kalsang Chophel was born at Kham, Tibet. At the age of 14, both of his parents passed away and then he enrolled in local monastery. At age 19, he joined Drepung Loseling Monastery in Lhasa.  He fled to India at the age of 29 and was able to study at Monastic refugee camp and later he moved to present local monastery at Mundgod. He has been bed ridden for the last three years because of his old age. He has been s taken care by his students.

Geshe Kelsang Tenpa

Geshe Kelsang was born at Bawa, Tibet. At the age of 17, he was enrolled in Drepung Loseling Monastery in Lhasa.  He was forced to leave Tibet due to the Chinese invasion in Tibet. He went to the Monastic refugee camp and later he came to the resettlement at Mundgod, where he earned Geshe Lharampa degree and in 1980 after completing his studies, he has been engaged in offering prayes and meditation.

Geshe Tenpa Chophel

At the age of 14, he became monk in a local monastery and studied for seven years. At age 21, he joined Drepung Loseling Monastery in Tibet where he studied vigorously elementary subjects. He flee to India and studied on Buddhist Ethics and Treasure of Knowledge after receiving full ordination vows from His Holiness the Dalai Lama.  In 1989, he succeeds Gelug examination and awarded Geshe Lharampa degree, the highest Geshe degree conferred.  Since then he has been giving teaching to large number of monks.

Gen. Lobsang Jinpa

Gen. Lobsang was born in Tibet in 1937. At the age of five, he entered in a local monastery. In 1951, he joined Drepung Loseling Monastery and became a member of its monastery in Lhasa. Unfortunately, he was not able to continue his study due to Chinese invasion in Tibet. He fled India and stayed at the monastic refugee camp at Buxadu, India until 1971 and then he moved to reestablished Drepung Loselng Monastery in South India. He served as a peon for the last seventeen years.

Geshe Tsipa Dorjee

Geshe Tsipa was born in Kham, Tibet. At the age of seven, he joined the local monastery and started learning preliminary course on Buddhism. Later he moved to Drepung Loseling Monastery in Lhasa, where he began intensive study of Buddhist Philosophy. In 1959, he fled to India and studied at Drepung Loseling Monastery in South India. After many years of struggle in learning, he succeeded in completing the traditional Buddhist studies and was awarded Geshe degree in Year 1981. Since then he has been giving teaching to many new comers for monastic examination.

Gen. Ngawang Khedup

Gen. Ngawang Khedup was born at Kham, Tibet. He joined local monastery at the age of eight. Later he joined Drepung Monastery in Lhasa to study five great subjects, beginning with logic and Prajnaparamita. In 1959, he fled Tibet, stayed at monastic refugee camp, and was able to continue his studies. He moved to South India and has been there until now. He has been suffering from arthritis for the last couple of years; he has been taken care of by his students
