The Tibet Fund plays a pivotal role in the fight against life-threatening communicable diseases in Tibetan communities of India and Nepal. We support screening, diagnosis, and treatment programs, as well as awareness campaigns to promote behavior change.
To prevent the spread of tuberculosis (TB), active case finding is conducted in settlements, schools, colleges, and monasteries. Positive cases receive medical treatment, diagnostic services, and supplemental nutrition. Tibetan health centers receive GeneXpert equipment for rapid, reliable diagnosis, and drug sensitivity testing is conducted to determine the most effective treatment for multi-drug resistant cases. According to the CTA Department of Health, the TB treatment success rate in India is now 92% and the mortality rate among TB patients receiving treatment is below 3%.
To prevent and control Hepatitis B, The Tibet Fund initiated a campaign to screen all community members in settlements, schools, and monasteries with funding from the U.S. State Department. Positive cases receive consultations, antiviral drugs, and guidance to make lifestyle changes, and unvaccinated community members testing negative receive vaccinations. Implemented by the Central Tibetan Administration and Snow Lion Foundation, this initiative aims to align with 2030 World Health Organization’s Hep B elimination targets.
