Jangchub Choeling Nunnery was founded in 1987 in Mundgod, South India. It serves as an educational institution dedicated to the rigorous study of Buddhist scriptures in the Nalanda tradition, leading to the prestigious Geshema Degree (Geshe for monks) – the highest level of training in the Gelugpa tradition akin to a PhD in Tibetan Buddhism. Alongside its academic offerings encompassing philosophy, grammar, poetry, and science, the nunnery provides a nurturing environment for approximately 270 nuns, spanning from ages 9 to 76.

Ugyen Choedon hails from Bhutan. She joined Sherab Choeling Nunnery when she was six years old. She transferred to Jangchub Choeling Nunnery in 2016 but had to return to Bhutan due to illness, causing her to miss exams. She resumed her studies at Jangchup Choeling Nunnery in 2023.

Tenzin Chotton is a 20 year-old nun from Mon Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. She was previously a nun at Gyang Gon Choeling Nunnery. Coming from a large family of six siblings, her parents work as farmers. In 2023, Tenzin joined Jangchub Choeling Nunnery.

Date of Birth: March 21, 2007
Leki is 16 years old and from Bhutan; she is a nun in Bhutan; due to her health condition, she decided to change the nunnery in India. Her mother passed away when she was seven years old. Her father struggled to raise her and her two siblings; her younger sister is also a nun in Bhutan, and her brother is a monk in India. Her father remarried, and she treats them as her child. With the help of one of my friends, she got the opportunity to join Jangchub Choeling Nunnery in 2024.

Stanzin is 12 years old from Zanskar in a remote area of Ladakh. Her parents are farmers. She has one elder sister and one younger brother; both are studying in school. She studied till 5th grade in her village. On 28th February, she got a golden opportunity to participate in the vow of nuns in front of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
