The Institute of Buddhist Dialectics founded in 1973, educates young Tibetans with strong academic backgrounds, integrating Buddhist philosophy with modern education. Its mission includes cultivating teachers, scholars, and researchers in Buddhism, Tibetan language, and culture, as well as exploring connections between Buddhism and modern science. Offering interdisciplinary courses, the institute grants degrees recognized by prestigious universities. Currently, IBD has 148 residents, including 23 nuns.

Name: Gongchoe Gyatso (Suman Deep)
Date of Birth: May 9, 1998
Gongchoe is from Moorang Village, located in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. He received education up to Grade V before joining Pal Dechen Chokhorling Monastery in 2010. In 2018, with the help of the head lama, he enrolled at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics. Gongchoe aspires to become a social worker and a Buddhist teacher but needs support for his education and living expenses.
Name: Sangey Phurpa
Date of Birth: March 16, 2003
Sangey Phurpa, who didn’t attend school, began learning Buddhism at Gatsel Norling Monastery in Tawang at a young age. With the help of the head lama, he enrolled in the IBD in March 2016 to study Tibetan Buddhist philosophy. Currently studying foundational topics, Sangey aims to pursue a 6-year program next year. His parents are farmers in Tawang with limited resources and struggle to support his education along with his siblings.
Name: Gelek Choe-nyen
Date of Birth: January 1, 2000
Gelek is from Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. He went to school in his village until Grade V and then joined the local monastery at the age of 11. With the assistance of the head lama, he gained admission to the IBD in January 2018 to learn Tibetan and study Buddhist philosophy. Gelek aspires to become a proficient Buddhist practitioner.
Name: Tenzin Dachoe
Date of Birth: December 11, 2000
Tenzin is from Reckong Peo. He studied up to Grade VIII before becoming a monk in 2014 at Pal Dechen Chokhor Ling Monastery in Clement Town, Dehradun. With the help of the head lama, he enrolled at the IBD in March 2018. Currently, he’s learning Tibetan, memorizing texts and prayers. His parents, who are farmers, struggle to support him.
Name: Sherab Gialchhan
Date of Birth: April 13, 2004
Sherab completed his primary education at Government High School in Hango Village up to the Grade VII, where he learned English, Hindi, and math. After that, he joined a monastery where he learned Buddhist prayers. In 2017, with the help of the head lama, he enrolled in IBD to study Tibetan and Buddhist philosophy. Currently he is focusing on Tibetan language and prayers and plans to pursue further studies.
Name: Choewang Rabgyud
Date and Place of Birth: July 31, 1991
Choewang is from Moorang, Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh. He completed his education up to Grade VI at a school in his village before he decided to join a monastery in Clement Town. He wanted to learn prayers and basic Buddhist philosophy. Later, he enrolled at the IBD, with the aim of becoming a proficient Buddhist practitioner and scholar and serving the community.

Date of Birth: August 10, 1998
Lobsang is from Arunachal Pradesh, India. He is the fourth child out of eight children in his family. His parents are farmers in a remote area. He attended school until Grade V before becoming a monk in Tawang Monastery. Selected by the abbot, he joined the IBD in March 2010. Currently he is enrolled in the Prajnaparamita Buddhist philosophy program.
Name: Sangay Dorjee
Date of Birth: June 20, 1999
Sangay comes from Tuting in Arunachal Pradesh, India from a farming family. In 2002, when Sangay was four years old, he was admitted to the Central School for Tibetans in Chauntra, Himachal Pradesh. Recognizing his potential, the school principal guided Sangay towards enrolling in the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics where he studied Buddhist philosophy in the long term. Sangay aspires to serve his community as an educator, translator, and social worker.
