Sermey Thoesam School  was established in 1976 to provide modern educational facilities to young novice monks. The school offers full-time, free education to children from destitute families, orphans, and newly arrived refugees from Tibet. The school offers education in Tibetan and English, in addition to subjects like science, mathematics, and social studies. Currently, the school has over 1600 students between the ages of 5-17.

Name: Tenzin Choedup
Age: 11 years 

Tenzin is currently studying in Grade IV. He completed his education up to Grade III at a Government School in Bomdilla, Arunachal Pradesh.  His family includes his father, mother, grandfather, and grandmother, as well as four siblings. His elder sister works as a nurse, while another sibling is still studying. Tenzin’s father is employed as a driver, and his mother is a homemaker. The family of eight relies entirely on the father’s earnings for their livelihood.

Yeshi, aged 13, originates from a remote village of Tsapa in Nepal. At the age of 8, he embarked on his educational journey by enrolling in Sermey Thoesam School. His family, comprising 13 members, revolves around agriculture and pottery. His mother tends to a modest plot, cultivating corn and vegetables, while his father crafts and sells mud pots. Yeshi is part of a closely-knit family, with three older brothers, five older sisters, and two younger sisters.

Lhundup, aged 11, started his journey at the tender age of 8 from his hometown in Tawang, nestled in the district of Arunachal Pradesh in Northeastern India. He left behind a family of five, consisting of his hardworking mother, who tends to a small plot of land growing rice and corn, and his father, who earns a living as a taxi driver. Lhundup also has an older brother, currently a monk in another monastery, and an elder sister who assists their mother with household chores.

Gelek, aged 13, was around 5 years old when his parents placed him at Narayan-than Temple, located a few hours’ walk from their small village in Nepal. Gelek’s father works on a small plot of land, cultivating crops. Sadly, Gelek’s mother passed away due to an illness. His elder sister assists their father on the farm, while Gelek’s elder brother is a monk at another monastery. It was his elder brother who brought Gelek to Sermey Thoesam School in 2023.

Age: 12 years 

Lhundup currently in Grade IV comes from Leh, Ladakh.  His father serves in the Indian Army and the family depends entirely on his father’s income.  Lhundup’s elder sister attends the TCV Leh School.

Name: Tenzin Dawa

Tenzin Dawa hails from a remote area in Tawang and is currently studying in Grade IV. He has an elder sister, an elder brother, and two younger brothers. His father serves as the Village Head, while his mother works as a school teacher.
