Gosok Rigzin Phodang Phuntsok Choekyiling Monastery located in Kathmandu, Nepal was established in July 2002 with a specific focus on educating young monks. The monastery offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers traditional subjects like reading, writing, and arithmetic as well as Buddhist studies. It has also incorporated foreign language studies and computer science Gradees in its curriculum. Currently, the monastery has almost 200 monks.

Gelek Kalsang, 17, Code # 101
Gelek Kalsang was born in the remote village of Montang in Arunachal Pradesh, India. He has five brothers and one sister. His father works as a carpenter and his mother is a farmer. His parents sent him to the monastery to study Buddhist philosophy.

Gelek Karma, 17, Code # 106
Gelek Karma’s parents reside in a remote area of Northeast India, where they work as farmers. However, their income is insufficient to cover the school fees for their children. Gelek, who is 17 years old, has three elder brothers and four sisters. He made the decision to become a monk and asked his parents to send him to the monastery.

Gelek Konchok, 17, Code# 104
Gelek Konchok was born to a poor family in a remote village in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, India. His parents earn their living by working on small fields. He has one elder brother and two elder sisters. It was Gelek’s own wish to become a monk.

Gelek Kunchen, 17, Code # 109
Gelek Kunchen hails from Montang, Arunachal Pradesh, India. He has an elder brother and a sister. Unfortunately, his mother had passed away and his father was not able to afford school fees due to his meager income as a yak herder.

Gelek Penpa, 19, Code # 115
Gelek Penpa was born in Montang, Arunachal Pradesh, India. He has four brothers and three sisters. Unfortunately, his father passed away and his mother works in small farms to provide for her children but she is unable to afford education for them. Gelek‘s brother is also a monk.

Gelek Sangye, 20, Code # 122
Gelek Sangye was born in Kapre Village, Nepal. His father used to work as a trekking guide in the Himalayas but he is now unable to work due to old age. Gelek’s mother earns a modest income by assisting with marriage ceremonies. Since his childhood, Gelek was drawn to the study of Buddhism and aspired to become a monk. He currently serves as the chant master in the monastery.

Gelek Nyima, 21, Code # 117
Gelek Nyima comes from a remote area of Bomdila, Northeast India. He has one brother and three sisters. His parent’s income from farming is not sufficient to provide education for their children. He was therefore sent to the monastery to study.

Gelek Jinpa, 17, Code # 123
Gelek hails from Northeast India. His mother passed away when he was young, leaving behind his father and siblings – one brother and three sisters. Despite the challenges that his family has faced, Gelek has a strong desire to pursue his studies and become a monk. He requested his father to send him to the monastery to fulfill his aspirations.

Gelek Tsultrim, 18, Code # 1997
Gelek Tsultrim hails from a remote region of Bomdila, Arunachal Pradesh, India. His parents are farmers and he has two brothers and two sisters. The little income that her family earns from farming is not sufficient for them to support his family. He requested his family to allow him to study and to become a monk.

Gelek Gyatso is from a remote area of Bomdila, Arunachal Pradesh, India. His family does farming for their living but is not sufficient to provide care and education for Gelek, he was sent to the monastery to study and become a monk.

Gelek Lobsang, 11, Code # 301
Gelek Lobsang hails from Bomdila, Arunachal Pradesh, India. His father works as a seasonal building construction worker, while his mother is employed in the fields. Gelek has two brothers and one sister. Due to their family circumstances, Gelek’s parents made the decision to send him to become a monk.

Gelek Tsephel, 11, Code # 298
Gelek Tsephel hails from a village in Bhalukpung, Arunachal Pradesh, India. His parents are seasonal construction workers and he has three siblings. It was his wish to become a monk and therefore his parents sent him to the monastery.
