Tashi Lhunpo Monastery was established in Bylakuppe, South India in 1972. Once a thriving monastery, Tashi Lhunpo before 1959 had more than 5000 monks. In exile, along with traditional monastic teachings, it also imparts modern education. Currently, the monastery is home to over 400 monks.

Jigmat, from Sham Sabi, Ladakh, has a family deeply rooted in education and service. His father serves in the Indian Army, while his mother teaches at the local school. Living with his grandparents and two brothers, education is a priority in their household. Following community traditions, Jigmat was enrolled as a novice in Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in 2020. With access to a well-stocked school library, Jigmat aspires to become a scholar of Buddhist philosophy and teach in the monastery after graduating as a Kachen.

Lobsang, from Zanskar, has a father who’s a carpenter and often works away from home. His mother takes care of the family and their animals. Lobsang has two brothers and they raise goats, sheep, and cows. He started studying at the monastery in 2015 and is learning Tibetan, English, math, science, and computers. When he finishes his studies, he wants to teach at a monastery school and translate Buddhist texts into English.

Lobsang, hailing from Zanskar, has a father who serves in the Indian Army. Due to his father’s duties, Lobsang only gets to see him during annual holidays. He has an elder brother, and their mother takes care of the home and the livestock they own. Lobsang’s family is devout Buddhist, and they enrolled him at the monastery in 2016. In addition to participating in morning chants and memorizing texts, Lobsang attends the monastic school where he learns Tibetan, English, science, math, and computers. He also enjoys playing volleyball and other games with his peers.

Name: Thinley Norbu

Thinley comes from a farming family in Zanskar, Ladakh, where he is the only son. He shares a close bond with his grandmother and uncle, who are important figures in his life. Raised in a devout Buddhist household, Thinley’s family holds strong beliefs in collecting merit and providing him with opportunities to become a learned monk to serve the Buddha Dharma. In line with this, they decided to enroll Thinley at Tashi Lhunpo Monastery.

Phuntsok, from a small village in Nubra, is the eldest of three sons. His father works as a mason while his mother manages the household. When the pandemic halted construction work in their village, the family faced financial struggles as his father’s income was their only source of support. In light of this, they sent Phuntsok to the monastery where he has adapted well to the routine. Upon graduating with the highest degree from the monastery, Kachen, Phuntsok aspires to become a teacher in the monastic school.

Stanzin, from the remote village of Domra Dekyi, Ladakh, belongs to a very poor family. His father works odd jobs as a daily wage laborer in the village, while his mother tends to their small livestock. Despite financial struggles, Stanzin’s parents sent him to Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in 2020. He is happy attending school there and enjoys learning various subjects, especially English.

Lobsang hails from Bylakuppe, Karnataka, from one of the largest Tibetan settlements in Exile. His father runs a tea stall and also sells groceries. His mother looks after the home and sometimes helps his father in the shop. Lobsang has two elder sisters. Lobsang’s parents enrolled their younger daughter in a nunnery in the same area as Lobsang’s monastery so that they can be close to each other.
