The Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV) in Dharamsala was initially established in 1960 with only 51 children. Over the years, it has grown into a community, consisting of 1200 residents and 150 day students. The residential school consists of 35 homes and four hostels, providing education from kindergarten to high school. The primary objective of TCV is to offer parental care and affection, build a strong foundation for nurturing Tibetan identity and culture, and promote the development of character and moral values. TCV has 11 branch schools, two day schools, two industrial training institutes, two youth hostels, two homes for the elderly, and an institute for Higher Education across India, with a cumulative strength of 5561 students across the country.

Lhakpa is 7 years old and was born into a poor peasant family in Nepal. His parents are farmers on their small plots of land, which barely fetches enough to feed the family. Since farming is the only source of income, the lack of transportation facilities, good schools, and hospitals in the village made his father admit him to TCV school.

Jamphel is an 11-year-old boy from Nepal. He is the youngest of three siblings and the only one attending school. His mother is a housewife, and his father has been struggling to keep up with the rent and basic expenses of the family. This has left him with no option but to withdraw Jamphel from his school in Nepal and seek admission at TCV School.

Rigzin was born into a poor nomadic family whose small herd of cattle barely met their daily needs. His parents sought help from the Welfare Office, and he was accepted into school. He now lives in foster care at home number 13 and will receive support until he completes grade XII.

Tenzin, hails from a remote area in Nepal. Given his family’s financial situation, he couldn’t afford any means to support his education. His eldest brother’s income as a laborer couldn’t cover the cost which led to his family approaching the Tibetan Welfare office in Nepal and getting admitted to TCV School, where he receives full support.

Tenzin, a 14-year-old Monpa boy from Shyo, Tawang, India, was admitted to TCV School despite not being Tibetan. The school’s ethos emphasizes the importance of sharing common culture and religion. Tenzin’s younger brother also attends TCV. Their father pursued admission to TCV with the aim of securing a better education for his children. Currently, Tenzin is enrolled in grade VII P.

Tenzin’s parents have five children. His father passed away two years ago, and his mother is a housewife. He has one elder brother, one elder sister, and two younger brothers. Although one of his sisters in the military helps the family, it remains very difficult for them. His mother requested admission for her children at TCV Head Office, and Tenzin joined the TCV in March of 2024. He is currently in Class 7, with 30 students in his class, and stays in Home No. 14.

Tenzin’s parents have three children. Her father passed away, and her mother works as a foster mother at the Tibetan School, Mussoorie. Given the challenges of caring for three children by herself, TCV Head Office admitted Tenzin to TCV School, Bylakuppe, this year, on March 6, 2024. Tenzin actively participates in various social activities and has a passion for Tibetan dance and singing.
