Keydong Thukche Choeling Nunnery was founded in 1982 in Swayambhu, Nepal. Built to provide a haven for nuns fleeing Tibet, particularly those from the original nunnery in Tibet, the Nunnery today boasts of being the first Tibetan Institution to provide higher education for Buddhist nuns. The nuns from Keydong were among the first to master the sacred art of mandala, a practice previously reserved for monks. Recently, the nuns have delved into learning the art of mani, an oral tradition conveying the spiritual and cultural values of Tibetan Buddhism to lay audiences. Currently, the Nunnery is home to more than 120 Tibetan nuns from Tibet, India, and Nepal.
