Before joining the Tibetan Women’s Helpline (TWH) as a counselor in 2021, Choedon had misconceptions about the prevalence of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the Tibetan community. With a background in psychology and counseling, she aimed to address the mental health concerns of refugees, shaped by her own separation from family in Tibet. Now, at TWH, she leads efforts to combat GBV in the Tibetan community in India and Nepal.
A 2021 survey revealed nearly 40% of 1487 respondents reported GBV incidents, highlighting the need for practical support for survivors. TWH, established in Dharamsala and managed by Tibetan women professionals with support from the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) and the Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA), offers counseling, legal advice, job assistance, and emergency services.
Choedon notes changing attitudes among younger Tibetans towards GBV but faces resistance from older women who view it as a foreign issue. Calls for help come from across the country, like a mother in Jaipur seeking help for her daughter, a domestic violence victim, and a mother from Nepal seeking support for her daughter who experienced sexual abuse in India.
Despite challenges, Choedon remains dedicated to upholding the rights of Tibetan women, drawing encouragement from survivors who express gratitude for TWH’s support.
