Agriculture Development
The Tibet Fund supports multiple initiatives to increase farming productivity and income in rural settlements of India and Nepal. Farmers in India receive soil tests and treatment, exposure visits to demonstration farms, and training in improved farm management practices. In Nepal households receive training, seedlings, and fertilizer to grow cash crops for local markets and vegetables for consumption. In remote high altitude settlements, drying sheds are provided to sell dried apples and apricots, and greenhouses are provided to grow potato seeds for local markets. In 2023 we began a new initiative with the Central Tibetan Administration and Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute to grow medicinal plants on farmer fields in four settlements in India, with the goal of linking farmers to markets for the traditional ingredients used in Tibetan Sorig and Ayurvedic medicine.
In Bylakuppe settlement the CTA Organic Research and Training Center  raises thousands of high value citrus saplings each year for transplantation to farmer fields, and provides citrus farmers with biofertilizers, green manure, fencing, drip irrigation, and marketing support. The center also generates income by selling saplings to Indian farmers outside the settlement.
